PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

In the digital age, security breaches are inevitable and cyberattacks against public and private school districts are becoming more frequent and severe. In fact, email scams alone have increased 2,370% from January 2015 to December 2016, now totaling $5 billion worldwide. Whether ransomware, wire transfer and email scams, or data theft, cyberattacks are a severe threat facing school districts across the Midwest and throughout the nation.

This training will make sense of the bewildering landscape of top cyber threats facing districts. We will explain the motivations and tactics of cyber threat actors (hackers), how their methods have evolved over time, and how they successfully prey on human behavior, complexity, and social tendencies, particularly in environments that may lack the funding and expertise to manage the threat. Backed by this understanding, you will learn best practices, tips and tricks on how to become more secure through a smart blend of controls, technologies, and cultural changes. The day will be rounded out with a look at real-life claim examples and an overview of what a good insurance program should include.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

This training will explore:
  • Historical and future trends and perspectives on cyber threats facing the education sector
  • Profile of a typical hacker, from students and employees to highly organized rings
  • Types of data at risk, and what happens to that data once breached
  • Real-life “from the trenches” case studies related to ransomware, email compromise, and data theft. These case studies will walk through each incident in detail from start to finish to gain an understanding of how they occur, and what issues arise during an incident.
  • Best practices and resources for responding to a cyber incident
  • Best practices on preparedness, monitoring and response strategies at the institutional level as well as personal cybersecurity habits
  • Importance of a cultural response to cyber risk, and how to achieve a proper “tone at the top”
  • The role of cyber insurance in managing your risk Lanny Morrow-presenter
